Markham fight but fall to defeat at home to Whiteheads

Markham faced Whiteheads on a sunny afternoon in the Village, perfect conditions for rugby. The opening ten minutes were very tight, as both teams tried to gain territorial advantage through their kicking game, the away side looked more potent through their forwards but didn't have a cutting edge. Fortunately for Whiteheads the Village's discipline slipped conceding multiple penalites, Whiteheads gained clean ball at the line out before crashing over for their first try.

It continued to a feisty affair with both teams putting in some crunching tackles, however as the game began to get more open due to the passive scrums, the away sides scrum half broke away into free air, before chipping ahead and collecting to score a superb individual try. Markham responded well however chipping their way into the Whiteheads with excellent ball retention, they then suffered a huge body blow. Markham kicked the ball away in an attacking position, instead of marking the ball the Whiteheads centre backed himself and sprinted away evading tacklers as he sprinted ninety metres to score under the posts and end any hope of a comeback.

Markham began the second half looking a little tired and Whiteheads punished them to get the bonus point try with another fast break. Everyone at King Georges Field would not have expected what was to come in the closing half an hour, with the Village much the hungrier team despite being down to 12 men at one point. The Village never looked really threatening throughout the afternoon, but the fans were given something to cheer after a fine solo effort from Dewi Carpenter who spun and twisted away from tackles before scoring under the post.

This score seemed to wake up the away side who upped their intensity and got back into Markham's half, they were consistently shut down by heroic defence especially from Luke Hughes. Markham's never say die attitude was epitomised by scrum half Sid Bacca, who laid a big hit on a player certain to score, but the pressure forced him to put his foot on the dead goal line. Not the result they wanted but the Village defence in the second half will give them much needed confidence heading into the final few games of the season.

Final Score: Markham 7-24 Whiteheads

Try Scorer: Dewi Carpenter

Conversion: Iwen Edwards
