Markham open season with bonus point win over Forgeside

Markham players were itching to get on the field after last week's game against Tredegar was postponed. However, it was the home side to got off to the better start after a scrappy first ten minutes where both teams were getting a feel for the conditions, the home side scored the first try of the game after poor tackling, the extras were added with a sideline drop goal conversion.

Markham responded well after a brilliant run from the right winger, who passed to Lewis Hughes who passed to Dewi Carpenter who passed to Moggsy to finish off an excellent team try. Gareth Price added the extras. Markham continued their momentum before half time, running the ball at pace, and executing an overlap again this time Lewis Hughes got his first score of the season breaking through a tackle, the Village led 14-7 at half time after a tough start to the first half.

Markham were again slow at the start of the half, and Forgeside got back in to the game after some solid carrying saw them bundle their way over. The game was very tense until Markham extended their lead after a brilliant solo run the Village full back from 75 metres cutting past five defenders. This try seemed to open up the floodgates after Markham continued to capatalise on loose ball, sub George Brains scooping up the ball and sprinting away to extend the lead, before Moggsy got a brace of tries with a simple run out wide, Markham with a comfortable 12-35 lead heading into the final stages. To their credit, Forgeside kept fighting and added a third try late on, but it was the Village who got their season off to a decent start against a tricky opponent.
