Markham edged out in final minutes against Cardiff Saracens

The Village came into the game off the back of an excellent win in the WRU Shield. They now faced a big task up against league leaders Cardiff Saracens who had won all six of their games with a bonus point to start the season.

The home side had the better start to the game, with their park gaining territory in tough conditions. Markham's defence however remained solid in the opening quarter of the match, and when the Village had their chance they executed. Out of nowhere came a scintilating break from captain Kris Meredith who slipped past defenders before passing inside to Dewi Carpenter who finished an excellent move, fantastic reward for excellent defence in the first half. Markham finished the first half stronger after some excellent work at the breakdown, but couldn't quite get any more points on the board as the referee blew for the half time break.

The Village faced incredible pressure at the start of the second half, with the Saracens camped in the Markham 22, they took the chance to get points on the board with a penalty to make it 7-3. Markham responded well to the score, and had their own period of posession with good patient phase play in the opponents half, sub Jordan Watkins slotted a lovely kick over the posts to restore Markham's seven point lead.

The momentum continued to change in the match, and the Village's discipline cost them dear in the final quarter of play. The home team executed their first try of the game with a powerful driving maul, Markham did well initially but the Saracens powered over the line to reduce the gap to just two points, which set up a nervy last ten minutes. The home side had all the momentum as the Village continued to give away penalties under lots of pressure.

Markham's defence frustrated the hosts, but the Saracens scrum half saw a small gap and sniped through to massive cheers from the Saracens home crowd, the conversion was added to make the score 15-10 with a few minutes remaining. Markham continued to fight in the final few minutes, but the soggy conditions didn't allow for attacking play and the referee blew the final whistle after a break in play. A losing bonus point for the Village against the league leaders, showing they are capable of mixing with the teams at the top and still plenty to play for this season.

Final Score: Cardiff Saracens 15-10 Markham

Try scorers: D. Carpenter
