Markham battle to win against Tref y Clawdd

Markham returned to league action following a few postponed games, it promised to be a close encounter with both teams near each other in the league standings. The Village started well with a try from Lewis Hughes in the first few minutes, but after that came a very frustrating 20-30 minutes for the home side with Tref controlling most of the ball, Markham continued to attack but the away side took the lead after a knock on was kicked forward and pounced on to score a try under the posts, Tref extended their lead after a period of brilliant defence from the Village keeping them out on their own line, Tref led 10-5 with not long to go until half time. Markham had to be clinical with little ball, and a wonderful score before half time with Dewi Carpenter skipping around tacklers, Man of the Match Sid Bacca kicked the conversion to give the Village a 12-10 lead at the half.

The Village, with momentum at half time continued their good spell shortly after half time, with one of the tries of the season. Dewi Carpenter with another fast break away, he passed to Tyler Coopey who gave a brilliant offload in the tackle to Dewi Carpenter who sprinted away for a brace of tries, the conversion was added to make it 19-10. The away side responded immediately, from the kick off. Powerful carries saw them camped on the try line, and they pushed their way over to reduce the deficit to just two points. The home side continued to play poorly with the lead, and a bad kick out of the 22 put the Village under more pressure. Tref capatalised on a overlap on the right and crashed over to put them back in the lead.

Markham needed to compose themselves in the final ten minutes to have any chance of a win, a turning point came when Dewi Carpenter chipped the ball through and was blocked off the ball, captain Kris Meredith pointed to the posts knowing there was time to push for the win, Sid Bacca slotted the penalty to tie up the scores. Markham continued to attack and forced the away side into several errors, Sid Bacca faced a tough penalty chance in increasingly darkening conditions, however he struck the ball beautifully as it sailed through the posts. The away side to their credit continued to battle hard, but after a turnover Markham kicked the ball off the pitch to get a vital win as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
