Markham edge Crumlin after late onslaught

Markham continued good pre-season form with a victory over local rivals Crumlin, the first half was a scrappy and tight affair with Crumlin dominating the ball and forcing several penalties from the home side. Markham were however the first side to get a score, following a great break the ball was recycled before Dewi Carpenter scored a good team try. The home side lost a lot of momentum when they were attacking in the Crumlin 22, the ball was turned over and the away side executed an easy overlap to tie the score 5-5. The away side continued to press and scored on the stroke of half time after a superb pass out wide. Crumlin led 10-5 at the half.

Crumlin continued to dominate in the second half, and knocked over a penalty to extend their lead to 13-5. Markham looked out of ideas for a while, but managed to reduce the gap to just one point when Gavin Price ran down the wing, before the ball was passed inside to Dewi Carpenter who stepped two players before finishing a fine solo effort. The away side showed good character as they immediately got back into the Markham 22, the home side held out for a while before Crumlin crashed over in the corner to make the score 12-18.

The home side were a lot sharper in the final period of the game, and with the Crumlin defence tiring a fizzing pass from Gavin Price put Dewi Carpenter into space for him to complete a superb hat trick, Price's drop goal conversion put Markham in front by a point. The Village then added another try after Kris Meredith's sprinted around defenders before powering the last two defenders to cross for a great try. Price kicked a sideline conversion to secure a 26-18 win and give Markham plenty of confidence going into the new season.
