Markham suffer defeat to St Julians in torrential conditions

Markham faced their first away fixture of the season at St Julians on an afternoon where conditions proved very tricky, at least for one team. The home side's experienced pack dominated early on and following a powerful maul the ball was passed out wide before a powerful finish gave St Julians a 5-0 lead. The Village were trying their best to respond and showed some good signs with good powerful carries from Stefan Evans and Iwen Edwards, however the home side always had the extra man at the breakdown and forced errors. Markham were, however rewarded for their hard work - St Julians had ball in the opposition 22 but a loose pass wide was pounced on Dewi Carpenter who jogged his way up the field for a try, and cut the deficit to two points. The home side responded straight away scoring a try exactly a minute after conceding one, they got back into Markham's 22 and gained a huge overlap on the left which they executed, their was more misery to come on the stroke of half time as St Julians continued to dominate thanks to Markham's poor exit strategy in their 22, they added a third try to give them a 17-5 lead at half time.

The second half was a much more scrappy affair with the ball mostly being played between both sides 22 metre lines, the home side were once again clinical after they executed another overlap on the right increasing their lead to 24-5. The away side were given hope after good play from Sid Bacca first, between Dewi Carpnter took the ball and stepped in and out of three players before placing the ball under the posts for a good try, the deficit reduced to 24-12 after Iwen Edwards conversion.

Markham continued to fight hard, but the conditions would not allow them to play the running rugby they are usually so good at, with time running out the home side put the game to bed to two more scores both following handling errors in slippery conditions, a harsh ending on the away side who showed plenty of fight throughout the game.

Markham look to get back to winning ways with a tough home fixture against Llanhilleth next Saturday, 2.30pm kick off.

Full time score: St Julians 36-12 Markham

Try Scorers: Dewi Carpenter (2)

Conversions: Iwen Edwards (1/2)
