Hafodyrynys execution difference in tight contest with the Village

Hafodyrynys and Markham met for the third time this season, following two pulsating encounters in Markham, with the Village winning the league fixture 15-10, before Hafodyrynys knocked Markham out of the Swalec Bowl in a feisty game. With both team’s promotions hopes hanging in the balance this promised to be another close encounter.

The home side started the game well carrying through their powerful back row, and they got ahead on the scoreboard 3-0 when Markham were offside. A much-changed Markham line up due to injuries responded well and after some great interplay between the backs and a good period of possession, the home side gave a penalty away in their half. Iwen Edwards struck the ball well to tie the game at 3-3 and the away side seemed up for the fight, with the home side yet to hit their stride. This soon changed though, Markham had controlled possession until a turnover on midfield gave Hafodyrynys a good chance to attack, a superb break from 14 put the Markham defence on the back foot, the ball was recycled well and passed out wide for a well-executed try, a tricky conversion was added with Hafodyrynys taking the lead, against the run of play at 10-3. Hafodyrynys had increased their level of play, and moved into the Markham 22, the away sides brave defence held out the rampant home side initially however following a solid platform at the scrum, the number eight cruised over the try line to extend the home side’s lead to 17-3, which they held on to heading into half time and fully in command.

The away side were much improved in the second half and showed a lot of guts winning turnovers at the breakdown. They continued to show a dynamic attacking ability through Ieuan Hale and Gavin Price – however each occasion they threatened in the home side’s 22 they were held out by a strong Hafodyrynys defensive line. A lot of the second half was played in the middle of the park, but the home sides discipline kept the Village in contention in the game. Markham were physical both in attack with physical carrying from Iwen Edwards, and in defence with numerous chop tackles shutting down the strong Hafodyrynys forwards from Zac Duggan, Markham could just not find that final cutting edge which would put them in with a chance of snatching a draw or getting closer on the score line. Hafodyrynys defence paid off when a poor kick from Markham gifted Hafodyrynys a chance to run the ball back and score a very simple try which ended any comeback attempt. Ultimately it was a losing effort for the Village however there was much to take from the heart and passion they showed during the game including a great performance in attack and defence from fly half Ieuan Hale. Markham will look to bounce back with a local derby against high flying Deri Broncos on Wednesday the 2nd of May.

Final Score: Hafodyrynys 22-3 Markham
