Markham go top of League 3 East B after ten try thriller

It was a still day and great conditions for running rugby down in Rogerstone, and both sides were certainly in the mood today as the Village edged the 10 try thriller. Markham had the advantage early on, managing to find the overlaps on the right side, a superb run from Gareth Price was followed up by another strong run from David Davies, before Cheesy ran a brilliant supporting line and managed to break away down the right-side line for an excellent start for the Village. They followed up with another superb try, a Jordan Watkins was well controlled by Gareth Price before an exquisite pop pass put Dewi Carpenter into space, Carpenter left a defender behind as he sprinted away to score Markham’s second try and the Village built a 12-0 lead.

That was all the positives for the Village in the first half, as the home side would dominate the remainder of the first half, Markham’s poor discipline and some slack defending at times allowed Rogerstone back into the game. The home side powered over from five metres out with a catch and drive from the line out, the second try for the home side was very similar – this time off the back of a scrum in Markham’s half, a powerful run from the back of the scrum saw Rogerstone break the defensive line again, and Rogerstone were now level after a poor start. Markham were struggling with Rogerstone’s physicality, and their No.8 had a great first half, he smashed into the Markham defenders on the try line, before the ball was quickly recycled and Rogerstone took a shock lead at half time of 19-12 after a try was scored and a conversion followed by the half time whistle.

Markham had to come out strong, after a poor end to the first half, they decided to play a more direct route with some hard carrying and kicking the ball deep into Rogerstone’s half, play slowed down before a busting run from Zac Duggan, the defender lied on the ball and gave Gareth Price a chance to reduce the lead, he did just that slotting a solid kick through the posts to make it 19-15. There was then a huge turning point in the game, Rogerstone continued to have their way with the Markham defence, breaking through tackles and entering the 22, Rogerstone’s impressive centre stretched his hand over the try line and dropped the ball forward squandering what would have been a nine point lead for the home side, under great pressure Markham got a crucial break when a floated pass was pounced on by Dewi Carpenter who sprinted away and couldn’t be caught as Markham went back into the lead after the conversion! The score now Rogerstone 19-22 Markham.

Markham had suddenly gained a lot of confidence and started to gain momentum with some good carrying, David Davies pulled in some defenders before Dewi Carpenter deflected kick fell straight into the arms of Lewis Benjamin who broke away for a well-deserved try, Benjamin was forced to join the back row in the second half and showed a lot of guts and determination. Markham would regain more ball after brilliant work from Man of the Match Andrew Peters, the Markham forwards continued to work through the phases with powerful runs from Iwen Edwards and Luke Hughes, there was a great break from David Davies, before Kris Meredith went on his typical blazing run on an angle onto the ball, breaking through tacklers before giving Markham a now commanding lead at 36-19.

The game seemed to be decided, however there was déjà vu when Rogerstone would dominate the final twenty minutes of the contest. With the ball in Markham’s 22, the home sides dangerous scrum half sprinted away from defenders and broke through a huge gap in the defence to score an easy try under the posts, the score reduced to 26-36. The only positive in the last twenty minutes for the Village, was immediately responding after Rogerstone were penalised, Gareth Price struck a very important penalty kick to stretch the lead to 26-39. Rogerstone responded with their own penalty a few minutes later to set up an intriguing last five to ten minutes, Rogerstone broke through Markham’s defence easily and were set up in the Village’s 22 once again. They capitalised with no Markham defender watching the blind side, the conversion was added as Markham’s lead was just three – a crazy turn of events. The Village were not deterred by the close score, and continued to attack hard, and won a penalty just inside Rogerstone’s half, Gareth Price’s attempt was short but importantly it took some time off the clock, there was time for one more flurry from Rogerstone on the right side, there was a little tension between the teams right at the end, but when the referee awarded a scrum for a knock on, there was no time left as Markham escaped Rogerstone with victory in an exhilarating encounter.
