Markham improve against Blaina but better execution sees away side win

Markham came up against Blaina, after their heavy defeat in the same fixture just two weeks ago. Both sides played very conservative early on as they looked to build momentum, it was the away side who took the first chance, following a poor kick they ran at pace into Markham’s half, despite some big hits they offloaded in the tackle keeping the ball alive, and finished a great try in the corner. Blaina were rampant once again as they entered the Markham 22, they looked sure to score before a brilliant try saving tackle dislodged the ball.

Markham then defence into attack, as they went through the phases patiently in the Blaina half, the away defence didn’t break but they did concede a penalty in front of the posts, Watkins slotted the ball over to reduce the deficit to 3-5. The penalty was all Markham were allowed in the first half as Blaina took command at half time with two more tries. Blaina’s ability to keep the ball alive in the tackle was too much for the retreating Markham defence to handle, Blaina increased their lead to 10-3 following another flowing move with both backs and forwards involved. Blaina upped the tempo again taking a quick tap penalty before an excellent offload off the floor for another good try. Blaina led 17-3 at the half, with Markham left a lot to do.

Markham came out in the second half much more aggressive and using a blitz defence to force mistakes from Blaina. The Village got back into the game with one of the tries of the season, Markham threw the ball wide before an offload inside to Dewi Carpenter who moved into space before two brilliant steps and a superb score under the posts, the conversion was added to reduce the lead to just seven. The momentum definitely with the home side, as they looked a different team forcing errors from the Blaina backs and another solid platform in the 22, then came the crucial moment of the match, after a loose pass the ball was booted forward by a Blaina player, with three chasing for Blaina, the ball was kicked forward again before being collected and placed down a try for the away side, a blow for the Village just as they looked to be controlling the game.

Markham lost all momentum as Blaina kept the intensity up, and they scored two more tries to increase the misery on the home side. Following poor discipline from the Village, Blaina went for a catch and drive from the line out before resetting and moving the ball out wide for a simple well executed try, there was still time for Markham to get back into the game, but Blaina’s sixth try ended the contest again excellent handling and simple rugby allowed them to gain an overlap before a simple score out wide. The Village unlike two weeks ago continued to fight on until the end, with the last phase of the game captain Gavin Price broke through the defence dancing away from defenders before the ball was moved quickly to Dewi Carpenter who used every last ounce of energy to hold a defender and secure a brace of tries. The full time whistle was blown after the conversion, a better performance from the Village but again Blaina’s execution this time the difference between the two sides.

Try scorers: Dewi Carpenter (2)

Full time: Markham 17-36 Blaina
