The Village start strong with convincing win over Llanhilleth

The Village began life in League 3 East B with a comfortable win at Llanhilleth. The Village secured a bouns point after scoring five excellent tries, and Llanhilleth could only respond with a consolation try at the end of the game.

The game started off with both sides showing impressive physical defence, the ball moved back and for with both sides struggling to secure territory, the Village looked threatening early on but some early season rust needed to be shaken off before they began to take chances. Markham added a penalty when Llanhilleth were penalised for offside, and Gareth Price kicked the ball over the posts to make sure Markham had something to show for their period of dominance.

Poor restart play from the Village allowed Llanhilleth to gain ball, however their back line failed to threaten and the No.10 was forced to kick the ball away under constant pressure from Markham scrum half Sid Bacca. Markham began to spread the ball wider, and despite having no space on the side line, man of the match Kris Meredith powered through defenders and crossed over for the Village’ first try of the season. Not long after, a poor kick from the home side was collected by Gareth Price who moved the ball on quickly, Dewi Carpenter was put into space and dummied superbly before getting his first score of the season, the conversion was added to make it 15-0. Markham continued to attack against a despondent home side, but handling errors prevented further scores; they did however score one more try before half time, the home side were under pressure in their 22 – Gareth Price made a great pick up, before passing to Gavin Price who threw a lovely looping pass to Lewis Hughes, who went clear to score Markham’s third try and give them a commanding 20-0 lead at half time.

Markham’s pack had gone very well in the first half, and the platform they provided early in the second half was key to the next score, a solid scrum allowed clean ball to go out to the backs in the home sides half, and Kris Meredith breezed past defenders, before a blazing run to score under the posts and put the game out of reach. There were regular gaps in the home sides defence, but the Village were just unable to capitalise knocking the ball on, on a few occasions. They soon sorted the mistakes out though, and another good move was executed this time as some superb handling allowed Gavin Price to break free, with an angled run and finishing easily under the posts. As the away side began to make some changes, Llanhilleth began to finally get some territory and use their ball carriers to get into Markham’s 22, however some excellent choke tackles from the Markham players gave Llanhilleth no chance of breaking their line. To their credit, the home side kept fighting and going through the phases in Markham’s 22, the home side powered their way over to get a consolation score. A very positive start for the Village who secured a bonus point win, next week promises to be a very different challenge against local rivals Aberbargoed.

Final Score: Llanhilleth 5-34 Markham

Try Scorers: Kris Meredith (2), Gavin Price, Dewi Carpenter, Lewis Hughes
