Markham gain promotion after thrilling win over Whiteheads

The Village headed into the game needing just one point to secure promotion to League 3 East B. Whiteheads proved to be very difficult opponents earlier in the year as the Village suffered their only loss of the season in the reverse fixture. The outcome was much different this time after Markham put on an outstanding first half showing.

It took the Village a minute to get on the scoreboard, after Simon Morgan collected the kick off and went on a powerful run before the ball was shipped out wide to the unstoppable Dewi Carpenter who raced into space and stepped around a defender to make the score 5-0. The second try was a typical score for the Village with a wave of attack in Whiteheads 22, they remained patient before a lovely pass out wide put Dewi Carpenter in for his second try, and Gareth Price kicked a brilliant conversion to make it 12-0. The away side had a period of possession but a chip forward was too heavy when it drifted over Markham’s dead ball line. Markham’s Kris Meredith always looks hungry for the ball, and when he run hard onto a sharp pass he drifted through a gap in the defence to score Markham’s third try and the score now 19-0 .

Whiteheads started to put pressure on Markham, and after several penalties were given away Whiteheads forced themselves over the try line to get themselves back in the game. However their hope was short lived after Markham gathered the ball from the restart, and moved the ball quickly out wide and Lewis Hughes battled his way over for the bonus point try. The Village scored three more times before half time, the lead was increased to 31-5 after a lovely dummy from Gareth Price caught out the defence and he jogged over his try, then the Village put in more hard work going through the phases in Whiteheads 22 before Man of The Match Stefan Evans drove over the line for a deserved try. Markham struggled against Whiteheads back at the start of the season in the scrum, it was the reverse this time as Markham’s scrum was very strong, and allowed Luke Hughes to burst off the back and crash over for a strong try which ended the first half with the home side completely dominating proceedings at 45-5.

Markham looked to build on their first half performance and after Kris Meredith broke through the defence to make the score 50-5, it looked like Markham were going to build a huge score. The away side showed the battling qualities that got them a win against the Village back at the start of the season, as they scored three unanswered tries. Markham took their foot off the gas and were punished, Whiteheads second try came after a lucky bounce of the ball was scooped up and a sprint to the line. Whiteheads confidence increased and they added a third try crashing over after some poor tackling from the Village, Markham then lost their discipline and gave away several penalties giving Whiteheads field position and territory. The away side crashed over for another try playing their brand of powerful rugby and solid carrying from the back row.

The Village didn’t want to end the game on a low and finally responded in the second half when a simple move from the scrum and pass onto the rapid Kris Meredith, who completed his hat trick with another superb run and finish. Markham continued to play with attacking intent but a poor pass was intercepted by a Whiteheads player and the away side scored their fourth try of the second half. There was just enough time for Markham to respond and they had the final say when a good run from Gareth Price got them inside Whiteheads 22, and a powerful run from Dewi Carpenter saw him break through two tacklers and score a try, the conversion was added as Markham secured a 66-33 victory.

It’s been another remarkable season for The Village who have secured promotion to League 3 East B after today’s exciting win. The boys have played some wonderful rugby this year, as well as scrapping hard to win tightly fought games. We all look forward to the crucial encounter away to the Deri Broncos which will decide who wins the league title.

COME ON THE VILLAGE!
